St Edmund's Church

Our congregation

We are a small, long-established, Anglican church in Forest Gate, Newham.

Our worship is in the Anglo-Catholic tradition with a Sung Mass at 10am on Sundays and Said Mass at 12.15pm on Tuesdays.

The congregation reflects the ethnic diversity of the Borough of Newham with members from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, as well as the UK. Members contribute to ministry as servers, readers and intercessors, and in assisting at Holy Communion.

In this area of many faiths and rich multi-culturalism, our church seeks to be a beacon of Christianity that reflects the beauty of holiness in its witness and ministry, serving God in welcoming and inclusive ways to all, irrespective of their cultural background.

Building

The building is in a busy residential road virtually equidistant between two extremely busy shopping areas. It operates as a church and community centre in a converted old vicarage which replaced a traditional Victorian church building which was no longer viable. The current building was dedicated in 1988 and subsequently remodelled in 1995 to improve accessibility.

The building is fronted by a chapel, designed by Cottrell & Vermeulen, with a single, floor-to-ceiling, pane glass window. There is a vestry and a small kitchen. The rest of the ground floor is a multifunctional area usually configured as a “lounge” and a main, larger, worship area.

To the rear of the Church is a small garden of remembrance. At the front is an area for outdoor play and a small open garden, mostly laid to gravel.

Charity Partner: Alternatives Trust East London

We are in partnership with Alternatives Trust East London which is based on the first floor. Alternatives is a small charity that empowers vulnerable families in Newham to transform their lives.
